A George I Field Maple and Sycamore (often called Mulberry) Cabinet on Chest with rosewood crossanding and pewter lines attributed to Coxed and Woster. Circa 1715.
Coxed and Woster were based in St Paul's Church Yard, London and were famous for this type of cabinetry. By using a mix of Aqua Fortis (Nitric Acid) and Lamp Black (Soot) they created this dappled 'Mulerry' to replicate tortoise shell which was particularly effective in candle light - see last image. Another Coxed and Woster signature was the use of rosewood banding with pewter lines. It has a wonderful colour and is beautifully proportioned.
